In my attempt to help revive this forum i thought i might make a lil somethin on Halo Wars
Wellllll lets start.....
I am an RTS fanatic was the first type of game i ever played as a kid (CnC) and will be the last... hehe i like everybody else was sceptic about it...seeing as it has only 2 factions and is on the console....which has never said much for past RTS.
However Halo Wars is.....gr8...the graphics are superb (do not go by the resolution of the demo the demo is very compressed), and the halo franchise is used very well, its not a stupid money making add on and the story telling is very nice, the live action cinematics are among the best i've ever see, my only gripe is that 15 missions isn't exactly a lot althought there is a good mix of diff types of missions ex. defend, search and rescue, hold out etc... For the halo fanatics the story is placed 20 years before halo combat evolved but unfortunatley for u guys masterchief fails to make an appearance but he is replaced by a number of equally powerful spartan soldiers...yes yes i know theyr not masterchief but theyll have to do.
The sound like all other halo games is top notch. If i'm not mistaken the same sound guys from halo 3 were brought in and once again they did an amazing job.
Now to gameplay well, there are 2 sides to every coin so lets start with the good: the game is amazingly simple to pick up and play, and very easy to play a very fast RTS, WID A CONTROLLER! the build system copies RA3 and CnCKW with the ring system and it works very well. There are also a lot of units u will recognise from the Halo stories and some new add ons. the game has a nice learnig curve and ul be circling round noobs in ur warthogs for a long time hehe The supply gather mechanism is very simple which can be seen as a good thing or a bad thing since it kinda removes some strats but makes u concentrate on the fighting which can be considered good. The game actually reminds me a REAL lot of Lord of the rings BFME 1 build sytem and all.
Personally i like the build system, its simple, its fast, its exactly like the 1 from BFME (you build on designated sights around a base)
Now the bad lets start with there only being 2 civs. Yes there are 6 sub-factions total but thats what they are sub-factions. Sorry for all you flood lovers they are not a playable race but you do kick their ass in the campaign hehe. Also the fact that the game is very simple can also be seen as a downer, Y???!! u might ask well for seasoned RTS players it can be a bit annoying. For example you cannot group units (wat u would normally do by pressing ctrl + 1/2/3/4/5..etc on a PC) and that bugs me a bit.
On the whole Halo wars is what it was made to be a gr8 CONSOLE RTS, lots of fun to play, the campaign is a bit short especially considering you can only play as 1 faction in the story but collecting skulls and playing Co-op and the MP will keep u busy for a while longer since mastering all 6 sub-factions might require some time.
I would recommend it to any1 but it can be a bit of an aquired taste so.....PLAY THE DEMO!!
i was actually very turned off by the game till i plyed the demo and i ended up buyin the LE all in all a very good game and deff one to add to ur halo collection :p Ensemble studios made a very nice job on this
